Summary of content

This module takes a deeper look at human rights and inequalities drawing on theories of power and justice from criminology and zemiology with a specific focus on the ‘Big 4’ Atrocities – genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and ethnic cleansing. Students will critically explore contemporary concepts of justice from hegemonic and minority perspectives through discussions around what constitutes justice and can justice be achieved in the face of mass atrocities. Teaching will include the critical analysis of case studies of atrocities, human rights abuses and the challenges of pursuing justice in a globalised context. Students will have the opportunity to engage with key literature in the field with specific focus on decolonising the curriculum through a variety of texts researched and written by and reflecting the perspective of the global south and minority groups. Contextual reference will be made to the SDG’s and Common Good Attributes.
