To be more than abstract ethical principles or legal ideals, human rights must be underpinned by measures which make them substantive and effective. Several Human Rights Charters and Conventions declare a universal right to basic financial security, and the first UN Sustainable Development Goal commits to eradicating poverty.
This module applies a comparative and multidisciplinary perspective to examine the relationship between poverty and human rights in theory and practice. Central to this analysis is the concept of citizenship - meaning full membership of and effective participation in society. This module examines the factors which impact upon citizenship rights, and assesses the relative effectiveness of different systems, institutions and policies introduced to support human rights. By these means, the module explores and critically examines the relationship between rights and reality and between charters and capabilities.
