SHE level 11 SCQF credit points 15 ECTS credit points 7.5 Module code MMK226175 Module Leader A.R. Heindric School School of Science & Engineering Subject Construction and Surveying Trimester A (September start), A (September start)
Summary of content This module operates a 50% pass rate overall. The module will provide students with knowledge and understanding of the principles of sustainable design and construction and introduce the main requirements, technologies, tools, methods, processes and systems required to develop a sustainable building. The module will be underpinned by consideration of lifecycle thinking, consideration of management techniques and also the technological aspects of the way in which we design, build, operate, maintain and ultimately dispose of buildings and their support systems.
Module details Syllabus arrow_forward Sustainable design and construction - an introduction Climate Change and the impact of buildings on sustainability Energy within the built environment (focus on EU Energy Policy Directives) Sustainability and corporate social responsibility Planning requirements and site selection (urban planning, master planning, equity etc) Principles of sustainable design Sustainable technologies (renewable energy, heating and ventilation systems, insulation materials etc) Refurbishment and retrofitting of existing building stock Modern methods of construction (lean/ agile production, offsite, prefabrication and advanced construction techniques) Sustainability and site management (considerate contractors, health and safety, reducing impacts, transport, waste management etc) Real Estate, facilities management and maintenance Sustainability assessment and project management (tools landscape , and introduction to key tools i.e. BREEAM, Eco-homes) Green and sustainable supply chains (lifecycle thinking, sourcing materials and technologies, eco-labelling) Case studies/best practice of sustainable construction practice/technologies (provided through the enhancement sessions and coursework)
Learning outcomes arrow_forward On successful completion of this module students should be able to: 1. Understand and critically evaluate the key principles and practices of sustainable design, technology and construction. 2. Display a knowledge and understanding of advanced construction techniques and how to apply innovative technology to specific sustainable construction activities. 3. Critically appraise the sustainability assessment tools landscape, demonstrating an ability to select the appropriate tool for a particular context in relation to the life value approach. 4. Appreciate the potential offered through sustainable management principles and processes, related to the effective coordination of planning, design, materials selection, site management, facilities management and reuse/ demolition of the building. Teaching / learning strategy arrow_forward The module will be web-based in its delivery with all students accessing GCULearn VLE for all module information, assessment information, teaching and learning materials. The module will be supported by 12 two-hour enhancement sessions aimed at introducing both full-time and part-time students to the high level principles of sustainable construction and to consider their application in detail within the different facets of design and construction. These enhancement sessions will promote debate amongst the students which will be facilitated through the use of the web-based class blogs, which will form part of the assessment, in addition to two coursework's focusing on different aspects of the module. The first coursework encourages students to consider the scale of the problem and the challenges faced by the industry in its response in the form of a critical essay and supporting class blog. The second asking students to consider a case study project and analyse the application of sustainable design, technologies and construction and provide recommendations.
