Summary of content This module introduces the practical skills, processes and techniques involved in creating User Interface designs for digital systems. The aim of the module is to enable students to apply the User Interface design principles in order to create effective visual design solutions. By considering brand personality, typography fundamentals, colour styles, layout techniques, iconography and images, prototyping and interactivity, students will apply the knowledge and practical skills required to design and plan effective and functional user interfaces.
Module details Syllabus arrow_forward Brand and Brand Personality - importance of consistency Typography - fundamentals of typography, importance of type hierarchy, creating heading, body, and button styles, spacing and forming text blocks, selecting font pairings Colour - colour styles, designing accessible colour palettes, the role of colour, shapes and effects Layout Techniques - grid, spacing and alignment systems, design patterns and layout consistency, white/negative space Iconography and image core components Fundamental interaction Design Principles Introduction to industry standard prototyping tools, collaboration, testing and how and why to use different fidelity prototypes UX Sketching, wireframing, interactions, animations, transitions, naming conventions, screen flows and high fidelity mock ups. Teaching / learning strategy arrow_forward The learning and teaching Strategy for this module has been informed by the University's Strategy for learning 2030, focusing on transformative education by providing equality of participation, excellence in learning, teaching and the student experience, flexible and accessible provision and preparing graduates with the relevant skills and knowledge for employment. The module material will be introduced through online lectures which will be used to highlight the key issues in a specific topic and point to further resources and literature for independent study. Face to face and/or synchronous online practical sessions will expand on lecture material through group and individual activities and give students the opportunity to practice techniques used within the UI design process and gain experience of industry standard software tools. Face to face and/or synchronous tutorials will provide opportunity for tutor led formative feedback and further practical work. Extensive use will be made of the VLE to enhance the learning experience and engagement of all students on the module. The VLE will be used as a repository for resources including key readings, assessment information and lecture recordings. It will also be used as a platform for discussion and reflection to stimulate independent and flexible student learning out with scheduled class time. Academic feedback on student performance for summative assessment will be provided in line with the University feedback policy and digital feedback and grades available on the VLE via the grade centre. Students will work on project-based coursework from a design brief which will challenge them to develop solutions to real-world or simulated industry problems. Industry guests will be invited to provide UI Industry Webinars and project critiques. Formative feedback will be offered at various stages of the module and students will be expected to share their activity in group-based tutorials and critiques.
