Summary of content This module provides grounding in applied User Psychology applying key Psychological Principles and Practices to informing both better-understanding of ourselves as designers and those who engage with our designs. The module will provide students with: working knowledge of the behaviour and mental processes of the user in relation to user design psychological approaches to designing, evaluating and communicating user experience, practical skill to apply Principles of Psychology to design examples, and academic writing and critical thinking skills to carry out, collate and communicate the importance of Psychology in Design to a range of key stakeholders.
Module details Syllabus arrow_forward The syllabus for this module will cover appropriate Psychological Principles and Practices in relation to human behaviours, mental processes, and their application to, study and evaluation in the design context. Example topics include: Memory, Motivation, Perception, Cyberpsychology Neuropsychology Emerging Technologies for health, wellbeing and education Memory, Emotion, Identity and Persuasion, how they are applied in design contexts, and what they can teach us about optimal design and user experience Practical knowledge and experience of applying Principles of Psychology to Design Examples with a focus on building academic writing and critical thinking skills Creating an Academic Portfolio Essay Writing Ethics and Statistics in Psychology.

Teaching / learning strategy arrow_forward The University 'Strategy for Learning' documentation has informed the learning and teaching strategy for this module. The module material will be introduced through online lectures, while practical and tutorial sessions will be face-to-face: Practicals will apply knowledge to design and practice, while Tutorials will be used to help explain and elaborate on both the lecture material and the laboratory exercises. The coursework for this module will involve an individual Academic Portfolio of written assignments exploring the importance of Psychology in Design and the application of Psychological principles to design and research of User parameters. Full use will be made of GCU Learn to provide Lecture-based and related study materials, along with sample solutions of Tutorial and Laboratory exercises, thus encouraging the development of independent learning and allowing self-reflective feedback on student performance. Staff-based feedback on student performance for submitted work will be provided in line with the University feedback policy, with summative feedback and grades on the coursework assessment utilising GCU Learn. The additional interactive discussion features of GCU Learn will be utilised, as appropriate to the module, to stimulate independent and flexible student learning outwith scheduled class time.
