Summary of content The module aims to provide the student with comprehensive knowledge and understanding of modern wired and wireless communication systems. The operation of a wide range of state-of-the-art telecommunication systems will be studied, e.g. satellite and optical systems, digital cellular mobile networks and wireless data networks.

Learning outcomes arrow_forward On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: 1. Deal systematically and creatively with the complexity of current wireless, optical communication and industrial communications systems and make sound technical and commercial judgements; 2. Demonstrate originality and self-direction in problem solving related to wireless system implementation and evaluation; 3. Further develop their knowledge and understanding to embrace new theories, techniques and issues related to antennas and propagation as they emerge; 4. Develop a sound knowledge of state-of-the-art simulation tools for the investigation of wireless system functionality, evaluation and design. 5. Critical evaluation of current research in wireless, optical and industrial communications systems and demonstration of the ability to interpret research in terms of potential practical usefulness. 6. Develop an awareness of issues at the forefront of modern wireless communication systems by critical appreciation of current research, relating current research to practical applications and knowledge of developments in national and international radio regulatory requirements.
Teaching / learning strategy arrow_forward This module will be taught by means of lectures, tutorials, laboratory work and case studies. Directed learning is also used to supplement and reinforce the material delivered in this module. Assessment of learning outcomes will be an oral test and a more detailed examination of the students' knowledge and understanding and problem solving skills in an exam environment. The oral test, will be based on the lab simulation work whereby students not only are required to demonstrate originality and self-direction in problem solving related to wireless system evaluation, but also to be able to critically evaluate current research to be able to compare with their results. The lab based work encourages diverge thinking as students are asked to identify current performance problems with a mobile network model and to suggest a number of solutions which then needs to be implemented in the model and tested. Inclusive and accessible learning is provided throughout this module material but also in the coursework whereby anonymised marking is performed. Individual, timely, high quality and constructive formative feedback is also provided.
