Summary of content This module aims to enable the students to develop a comprehensive view of power system operation, power flow analysis, stability and protections. Appropriate modelling, analysis and design skills of AC power systems in steady state and in post-fault operation will be introduced.
Module details Syllabus arrow_forward The taught syllabus covers the following areas: Power system modelling - synchronous machines, AC transmission lines, transformers, loads. Power system phasor and dynamic models, linearization and small signal models. Power flow analysis. Power system control of active power, reactive power, excitation, voltage and frequency Power system stability assessment method. Power system transient analysis. Fault analysis. Power system protection schemes and case studies.
Learning outcomes arrow_forward On successful completion of this module the student should be able to: 1. Use appropriate mathematical techniques and specialist computer software to model synchronous machines and AC transmission lines and loads. 2. Provide detailed design and analysis of the active power, reactive power, voltage and frequency control of power systems. 3. Understand the power system stability assessment procedure and method. 4. Understand and perform power flow analysis with specialist computer software. 5. Perform power system transient analysis with appropriate mathematical models and computer software. 6. Analyse and design appropriate schemes for power system protections.
Teaching / learning strategy arrow_forward The module material will be introduced through lectures, while practical exercises, based on the lecture material, will be given to students for their practical sessions. Tutorials will be used to help explain and elaborate on both the lecture material and the practical exercises and provide opportunities for tutor led formative feedback to students. This is detailed as follows A policy of providing staff access to students a programme and library induction pack and supporting tour a module handbook providing detailed information. Support of a module leader and programme leader, in addition to student representatives. These representatives reflect students' views and concerns at staff-student liaison committee meetings and programme committee meetings. Underpinning support is provided from central university support services including: online study skills facility, student counselling service, and access to the Learning Development Centre, IT support using e-mail and/or on-line resources). Development of knowledge and skills, and the use of tools, techniques and methods which are immediately useful to employers, both in the UK and overseas. Strong emphasis in the module on industrial or research projects including the use of visiting lecturers and industrial visits. The module is designed with a very strong professional emphasis taken from the industrial expertise of staff, the industrial liaison committees and the professional body requirements. This will enhance the career opportunities of the students in industry. The lecture delivery will be enhanced by a variety of genre including, where appropriate, videos, computer based models and other multimedia approaches On line learning materials are available electronically. Discussion boards will be used to encourage teacher and peer-to-peer dialogue on certain topic areas where this form of communication would be regarded as effective.
