Summary of content This module introduces students to key factors affecting occupational performance across the lifespan, including a range of health conditions. Using an occupational perspective and biopsychosocial frameworks, students will explore the interrelationship between occupational performance, health, and wellbeing. Students will learn about the impact on occupational performance of body structures and functions, as well as wider human and environmental factors. They will develop knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, including major organ systems such as respiratory, cardiovascular, and musculoskeletal systems. Building on this, they will examine the prevalence and aetiology of a range of health conditions and critically consider their impact on individuals’ occupational performance and participation, as well as broader implications for communities and populations.

Learning outcomes arrow_forward On successful completion of this module, students should be able to demonstrate: 1. Knowledge and understanding of a range of major organ systems and their relevance to occupational performance. 2. Knowledge and understanding of the morphological features of the skeleton, including the joints and prime movers, and their relevance to occupational performance. 3. Knowledge and understanding of the range of cognitive functions, and their relevance to occupational performance. 4. Critical understanding of prevalence and aetiology for health conditions for communities and populations. 5. Critical evaluation of the impact of health conditions on occupational participation and/or performance relevant to lifespan stages. 6. Critical analysis of relevant person and environment factors and their impact on occupational performance and occupational roles relevant to lifespan stages.
Teaching / learning strategy arrow_forward A variety of learning and teaching approaches will be employed within this module to support the development of knowledge, understanding, and application of key occupational therapy and occupational science concepts. A flipped classroom approach will be used, with asynchronous lectures and other directed learning activities for key topics, including physiology, anatomy and cognitive functions. These will be complemented by seminars designed to expand and apply this knowledge by learning about health conditions across the lifespan, using case studies, current research, and real-world examples. This approach will foster higher-level discussion, peer collaboration, and co-operative learning, enabling students to critically evaluate concepts. Practical sessions will provide opportunities for students to apply anatomical and cognitive function knowledge, and to develop skills in activity analysis through active participation in activities of daily living. Independent learning will be supported via the University’s virtual learning environment (GCU Learn), where a variety of digital resources will be made available to extend and consolidate learning beyond the classroom. A range of formative learning activities will be embedded throughout the module to clarify assessment expectations, encourage self-evaluation, and build confidence in working towards the learning outcomes. Learning activities and delivery methods may be provided in-person or online, as appropriate, and will be determined by the Module Leader in accordance with university guidelines and module requirements.
