Summary of content

The aim of this theory-based module is to give students the opportunity to explore and critically analyse concepts relating to human rights and fundamental ethical theories - and how these underpin and inform nursing practice, codes of conduct, legislation and other safeguards in a values based way. This module will enable students to debate values in the context of individuals across the life span, organisations, global populations and all fields of nursing practice. Through consideration of how values are formed, influenced and perceived, students will critically reflect on their own values to understand their developing identity as nurses. They will evaluate and apply ethical theories and principles to a range of contemporary practice issues (local, national and global) in order to articulate how values impact, shape and direct professional nursing practice and how safe, effective and compassionate person and family centred care may be enhanced.
The module will promote understanding and respect for diversity, placing the values of individual users at the centre of care, listening to what people say, seeing the whole person and where appropriate, recognising the person as the "expert" in their care experience. Common Good values of integrity, responsibility and confidence are core to the module.
