Summary of content

This module critically examines the nature and practice of prudential and conduct regulation that is at the heart of the regulation of the financial services industry world-wide. Using the UK as a prime example, but also drawing upon the work of other national and international examples and case studies, it assesses the ability of regulators to manage the macro- and micro-prudential challenges that can create existential challenges both for individual institutions and financial systems as a whole. Using past and current examples, it will examine how prudential regulation had developed internationally, looking at banks, insurance companies and non-bank financial institutions.
The module will also look at the challenges facing financial services consumers, considering issues of consumer behaviour, capability and vulnerability, as well as critically assessing how regulators have attempted to regulate the conduct of financial firms towards their customers. In doing so, it will provide a detailed assessment of the governance and culture of financial firms, as well as regulatory approaches concerning product regulation and the regulation of advice. The module will also look at the increasing significance of cryptocurrency and financial technology and its implications for financial regulation.
Module content supports: SDG3, SDG8 and SDG16
