Summary of content

The Business Case Investigation provides a dynamic learning environment using a programme relevant Business Case Study as an authentic and work-related experience. A multi-disciplinary approach to in-depth analysis of a case study will enable students to apply knowledge gained from modules across their programmes to business problems.

Students are expected to scope out the context of the problem, undertake appropriate research, apply data analysis and financial analysis then validate ideas and solutions. The process is designed to develop essential employability skills, behaviours and competencies.

Learning on this module is applied, contextual and reflexive, designed to encourage students to take a holistic approach to business in a manner that test and stretches their knowledge. Skills development are aligned with the key competencies for employment opportunities.

Module details

The Case Study: Case study method has long been a recognised teaching and learning strategy that enables students to apply knowledge while at the same time developing and co-creating ideas. An in-depth business case study is a live case of a business/organisation facing a current problem, and will act as the teaching and learning vehicle. Each programme will be placed to choose its own case study either staff generated from departmental research groups or GCU research centres or through interface or a professional body. The case study will be extensive and supply a learning environment for twelve weeks requiring deep examination and complex analysis of different perspectives through a multidisciplinary approach.

Lectures: in alignment with the GCU SfL 2030, lectures will be delivered by discipline groups and will include industry speakers. Using a common framework for case study analysis, students will enhance skills and discipline-based knowledge in relation to case study analysis, research skills, creativity, data analytics, numeracy and statistical analysis.

Seminars: Facilitated by tutors and student centric, seminars provide the discipline-based learning environment where students can investigate, discuss, debate and analyse key aspects of their case study in relation to their degree.

Feedback: The feedback principles for this module are based on discussion and interaction during workshops, lectures and the case study. Feedback appears in various formats; written, oral, and online. Written feedback is also offered at a group level using a feedback/forward mechanism. Students receive feedback for assessed coursework, including overall comment(s) made by tutors, which will elaborate on any particular point(s) from the marking of student work. Generic feedback will also be available on GCU Learn. Students are invited to discuss any element of assessment feedback with individual module tutors.
