SHE level 9 SCQF credit points 20 ECTS credit points 10 Module code M3K226935 Module Leader Yves Agnew School School of Science & Engineering Subject Construction and Surveying Trimester A (September start)
Summary of content A study of measurement, documentation & contractual arrangements, including: (a) Consideration and measurement of the elements of relatively simple structures, including civil engineering structures (b) Interpretation of RICS NRM2 and CESMM4 requirements relating to Employer's requirements, Contractor's general cost items (c) Current and future developments in contract documentation (d) Procurement: selection of contract & tendering procedures
Module details Syllabus arrow_forward Application and consolidation of core Quantity Surveying studies including the measurement of some of the following substructures: including cut and fill measurement of earthworks the use of schedules basement construction in-situ reinforced concrete and steel framed structures piling and retaining walls. The purpose and application of Preliminaries and General Items, Preparation of tender documents Standard Forms of Building Contract Methods of procurement and selection criteria Selection and application of construction contracts
Learning outcomes arrow_forward Learning Outcome On successful completion of this module the student should be able to:- 1. Demonstrate a knowledge of simple and advanced construction technology and ability to apply, assess and interpret the interface of written and drawn information, (A1, B1 & D3); 2. Critically use knowledge of design principles and construction technology in the basic assessment of risk, and production of tender documentation, (A1, B1 & C1-3); 3. Apply theoretical learning to practical tasks involving the principles of measurement and good practice, in the context of simple and advanced forms of construction (A2, C1 & C3); 4. Critically evaluate and apply formalised codes of measurement practice in the production of bills of quantities and tender documentation, (A2, C1-3); in particular NRM2 and CESMM4 5. Critically assess and form sound judgements in the adaptation of NRM2 and CESMM4 guidelines to suit given situations, exercising personal and professional integrity (A2, B3 ,C2, C6 & D1-3); 6. Demonstrate a commercial awareness in the management of time and resources (A3, D6); 7. Apply knowledge of procurement and tendering procedures to given situations, (A5); 8. Understand the relationship of measurement and tender documentation to contractual arrangements and cost. (A5); 9. Demonstrate competence in assessing the effect of procurement and contractual conditions on tendering outcomes, (A5); 10. Apply cognitive skills relating to the module, demonstrating logical and effective problem solving abilities, exercising critical and sound judgement in workshop situations and through assessed work (B1-3, C2, C6, D1-2); 11. Effectively apply technical knowledge in the assimilation, and interpretation of differing formats of information, (C3); 12. Work independently, and organise and apply effective time management in the solving of problems related to the discipline, (B2, D6-7); 13. Effectively use dedicated software packages in th
Teaching / learning strategy arrow_forward The purpose of this module is to assist students joining through direct entry in gaining confidence in: (a) relating aspects of construction measurement to the requirements of NRM2 or CESMM4 using judgement and good communication skills. (b) in relating construction situations to a contractor's resourcing of a given project as detailed in the Preliminaries Section of NRM2 or Class A (General Items) of CESMM4. (c) relating procurement and contractual conditions to given situations, and assessing the effects on thecontractor's tendering policy. This is achieved by: (1) Lectures in which theoretical concepts and principles are taught, augmented by practical demonstrations to provide models on which students can build (2) Tutorials and workshops enabling students to practise measurement and documentation principles under supervision, utilising drawn information, published guidelines and given examples. (3) Provision of computer generated worked examples and presentations ( some with voice over provision) for student-centered individual supplementary study. Learning and teaching strategies will be developed and implemented, appropriate to student needs, to enable all students to participate fully in the module.
Indicative reading arrow_forward Transferrable skills arrow_forward The development of: (1) communication skills, analysis and evaluation (D14) (2) powers of interpretation of construction drawings and related specifications (D2) (3) creative thinking and independent judgement (D1, D2, D3) (4) the generation, interpretation and presentation of complex data in conformity with established methodologies, formats and conventions (D5, D8, D9, D14) (5) competence in computerised applications (D13)
