Summary of content

This module builds upon the students knowledge of ocular disease, clinical instrumentation and refractive management to explore normal and abnormal findings from ocular assessments and how to communicate these with patients. Consideration will be given to history taking, assessments, record card interpretation and referral of ocular disease, including emergency presentations. Alongside, the module will introduce general principles of diagnostic and other ocular drugs with particular emphasis on use and supply. the drugs commonly used in optical practice. This module will also explore results produced by various clinical devices, showing abnormal and normal presentations and how these are recorded clinical records and can be explained to the patient. With this, it will also cover common ocular and systemic disease associated with abnormal findings. Lastly it will cover the triaging of ocular diseases and how to effectively identify emergencies and assist in referring a patient appropriately for treatment.

This module offers a blended learning approach with flexible, online activities delivered in conjunction with interactive tutorials and practical sessions. This blend encourages problem-based learning and application of theoretical knowledge to clinical practice.
