Continuation of the work begun in Measurement 1 and more advanced construction including:
- Domestic hot and cold water installations
- Domestic electrical installations
- Reinforced concrete frames
- Civil engineering measurement:
- Measurement using NRM1
- Masonry and
- Finishes
- Industrial buildings
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module, the student should be able to:
1. Demonstrate a knowledge of more advanced forms of measurement and ability to apply, assess and interpret the interface of written and drawn information, (A1, B1 & D3);
2. Critically use knowledge of more advanced design principles and construction technology in the assessment of risk, and production of tender documentation, (A1, B1 & C1-3);
3. Apply theoretical learning to practical tasks involving the principles of measurement and good practice, in the context of more advanced forms of construction (A2, C1);
4. Critically assess and apply formalised codes of measurement practice in the production of bills of quantities and tender documentation, (A2, C1-2);
5. Critically assess and form sound judgements in the adaptation of the current methods of measurement of building and civil engineering works guidelines to suit given situations, exercising personal and professional integrity (A2, B3 ,C2, C6 & D1-3);
6. Apply cognitive skills relating to the module, demonstrating logical and effective problem solving abilities, exercising critical and sound judgement in workshop situations and through assessed work (B1-3, C2, C6, D1-2);
7. Apply technical knowledge in the assimilation, and interpretation of differing formats of information, whilst being aware of deficiencies in the amount and content of information provided by others, (B4-5, C3);
8. Work independently, and organise and apply effective time management in the solving of problems related to the discipline, (B2, D6-7);
9. Effectively use dedicated software packages in the production of bills of quantities and tender documentation (D13);
10. Use effective communication skills, (written, oral and listening), necessary for the assimilation and solving of problems (D14).
The purpose of this module is to assist the student in gaining confidence in relating aspects of construction measurement to the requirements of the current rules of measurement using judgement and good communication skills. The strategy also seeks to help the student gain competence in relating construction situations to a contractor's resourcing of a given project as detailed in The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors New Rules of Measurement 2 - Detailed measurement for building work 1st Edition.
This is achieved by:
(1) Lectures in which concepts and principles are taught, augmented by practical demonstrations to provide models on which students can build
(2) Workshops enabling students to practice measurement and documentation principles under supervision, utilising drawn information, published guidelines and given examples
(3) Computerised taking-off and bill production / work package techniques to augment practical demonstrations and workshops.
Learning and teaching strategies will be developed and implemented, appropriate to students' needs, to enable all students to participate fully in the module.
