Summary of content

This module introduces students to the context, nature, perspectives and key activities in human resource management. The module is structured across two distinct themes: introducing key concepts of HRM and fundamentals of HRM. The rationale is to provide students with insights and transferable references to wider perspectives of HRM and the employment relationship, in addition to its application and functions within the workplace, whether local or international. Throughout each of the themes contemporary issues in HRM will also be addressed, thus allowing students to engage with topical challenges in the management of human resources and consider the roles of HR and line managers within multiple arenas. The contemporary issues may include for example work-life balance, knowledge management, ethics, Corporate Social Responsibility, international HRM, social media and HRM, staff fraud and dishonesty and workplace bullying. Students are offered the opportunity to apply theoretical perspectives to their own experiences and expectations of work and indeed their role in the workplace. Furthermore, enhancement of employability skills through engagement in the group presentations encourages consideration of career opportunities and how the knowledge and skills gained in this module can contribute towards these.

PRME related issues will be considered throughout the module ensuring that students develop their knowledge of responsible, ethical and sustainable practices. Specific examples of this include the importance of providing equality of opportunity for all employees, carrying out HR activities (e.g. selecting employees) in a fair and transparent way, valuing diversity within the workplace, considering the role of HR in corporate social responsibility.
