Summary of content

The purpose of this module is to equip students with an understanding of the evolution of fashion trends over time, the cultural aspects that have changed and developed over the decades/centuries. The module will create a journey through fashion history acknowledging the social importance of fashion and its influence on society. Whilst identifying the economic and cultural impact of fashion. Students will develop an awareness of historic shifts and the changing silhouette. The module focuses on significant periods in time, their effect and the creation of subcultures, including the development of couture to contemporary fashion houses and designers. From the historical underpinning students will further identify key societal issues in fashion today, including the pace of fashion technology and the importance of sustainability. The final strand of the module will explore how globalisation, trendsetters and fashion influencers are affecting fashion today.

Summary of how PRME-related issues / topics are covered in this module :
The fashion business is recognised as a global industry and as such is affected by environmental issues, unethical practices and sustainability. Hence this module, takes account of these issues throughout the teaching, in particular the international fashion supply chain and garment production, and aims to inform and develop the students understanding and critical awareness of these issues.
