Summary of content

The United Nations Education for Sustainable Development for 2030 aims to bring about the personal and societal transformation that is necessary to respond positively to the pressing challenges that the world currently face. The UN’s decade for Sustainable Development sought to mobilise the educational resources of the work to help create a more sustainable future. Sustainability and sustainable development are in the foreground of contemporary challenges facing business and society worldwide. Some of the pressing issues that society and businesses are faced with are climate change, income inequality, depletion of natural resources, human rights issues, fair working conditions, pollution, racial injustice, and gender inequality.
There are many paths to sustainability including sustainable finance, sustainable agriculture, sustainable production and consumption.

The principal aim of this module ‘Global Challenges for Business and Society’ is to integrate the principles, values and practices of sustainable development intro all aspects of education and learning throughout the degree studies.

According to United Nations, ‘Sustainable development is how we must live today if we want a better tomorrow, by meeting present needs without compromising the chances of future generations to meet their needs. The survival of our societies and our shared planet depends on a more sustainable world’.
The overall aim of the module is to develop intellectual skills and deeper understanding of the challenges associated with a transition to more sustainable systems of consumption and production in order to develop a sustainability mindset. Module details

The teaching and learning strategy of the module will involve face-to-face teaching, with a mix of on-campus lectures, seminars and workshops. The module is developed using innovative pedagogies using the ABC learning design https://abc-ld.org/ framework and UN PRME’s impactful 5 (i5) framework.

Essential conceptual knowledge on each topic will be introduced in a weekly lecture of 2-hour duration, with associated directed reading and learning materials accessible via GCULearn. Eight 2-hour seminars are designed to allow students to test and deepen their level of knowledge and understanding of each topic normally through discussion questions and self-reflection activities. Carbon Literacy Training (CLT) is a core part of module learning and will be delivered through four workshops of 2-hour duration. CLT will deal with practical aspects of understanding the basic science behind the climate crisis, the impact different sectors such as food and retail have on our climate and vice versa. This will also help students to develop climate Change mitigation tools for students of business and management to identify and plan to implement solutions with the highest impact; to understand how businesses can mitigate risks of climate change, to develop strategies and skills for communicating climate actions, and your personal possibilities to act privately and in your current/ future role.
Hence students are expected to engage in independent learning prior to attending the seminars and workshops by reviewing the lecture material, the recommended reading and the seminar/workshop task. The seminars use small group working and plenary class discussion in order to develop transferable soft skills relating to oral communication and team working as well as problem solving, analytical and critical thinking skills.
