Summary of content
This module explores the natural world and the associations between, geography, land, climate and natural environments including their habitats, ecosystems and biomes (biology and ecology) and their use and change around the world. The theory of the componentry of geographical systems is developed and this is supported by an applied element in the form of a field trip in which survey of a natural environment is carried out. Key concepts and theories regarding how geographic patterns have also been affected by complex historical and current factors such as changing climate and environmental pressures from man or invasive species will be identified. The module will examine ecological concepts from microbial biology to whole ecosystems ecology and will lead to a wider discussion on the distribution of species within communities across landscapes. Global conservation strategies and the interplay of global environmental agreements will be discussed in terms of allowing us to better manage threats to biodiversity from environmental change.
