SHE level 7 SCQF credit points 20 ECTS credit points 10 Module code M1H223148 Module Leader Gideon Ayim-Mensah School School of Science & Engineering Subject Civil Engineering and Environmental Management Trimester B (January start)
Summary of content The module will introduce the student to the types of maps and plans, linear surveying, the instruments used and the accuracy aimed at. The module will extend the students knowledge to a more detailed surveying including levelling, traverse surveys, tacheometry, curve ranging and methods of calculating volumes.
Module details Syllabus arrow_forward Standard methods of collecting data using:- Linear surveying. Levelling - the height of the plane of collimation and the rise and fall methods. Theodolite traverse survey methods. Use of a total station and recording of data. Introduction to Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Standard methods of processing data to evaluate:- Quantities of land area. Quantities of excavated or fill material. Location of specific items by their latitude and departure in relating to the National Grid System. Information necessary for setting out of horizontal and vertical curves.
Learning outcomes arrow_forward On successful completion of this module students should be able to: 1. Use Ordnance Survey maps and plans and National Grid co-ordinates 2. Perform a self check to ensure the equipment is calibrated correctly 3. Conduct a linear survey, record the information and plot the survey 4. Conduct levelling, book and reduce the readings and apply arithmetic check 5. Use direct and indirect methods of contouring 6. Make a traverse survey, reduce the field data and plot the results graphically 7. Explain the principles of distance measurement by stadia tacheometric and electromagnetic methods 8. Make necessary calculations to fix the positions of points forming a horizontal or vertical curve
Teaching / learning strategy arrow_forward Lecture and tutorial sessions will be backed by practical exercises in the use of surveying equipment. Private study will be crucial in development of skills in levelling calculations, traverse survey computations and setting out calculations. Learning and teaching strategies will be developed and implemented, appropriate to student needs, to enable all students to participate fully in the module.
Transferrable skills arrow_forward Ability to contribute effectively to team work Use of creativity and innovation in collection, manipulation and sorting of data Use of general IT tools Effective communication Time and resource management
