Glasgow Caledonian University’s Advanced Higher Hub achieved an overall pass rate of 88% this year, with History and Mathematics of Mechanics attaining a 100% pass rate.

History has achieved a 100% pass rate continuously since the Hub started in 2013.

The national pass rate for Advanced Highers this year was 81%, compared to 90% in 2021 and 93% in 2020.

The SQA has an open Appeals Service this year following Covid-19 disruption and it is anticipated that the Hub’s overall pass rate will further increase, putting it on a par with the pre-pandemic level.

The Hub’s online pilot, with partners in SWEIC, achieved a pass rate of 83%. Modern Studies attained 100% pass rate.

Hub pupils have now accepted university places at GCU and all over the UK. Megan McCloskey, from Castlemilk, is just one of six people out of 350 who applied to be accepted at Oxford University’s Queens College to study for a degree in chemistry.

Head of Outreach at Glasgow Caledonian University, Eleanor Wilson MBE, said: “The Hub team and I are over the moon with the results from both Hubs this year. The past three academic years have been some of the most challenging in terms of educational disruption and our Hub students took to their first SQA exams demonstrating hard work, resilience and determination to achieve.

“We have developed a blending learning approach to the Hub’s delivery and the teachers have embraced and adapted a national curriculum designed for classroom instruction to an online environment with great success. The online pilot was a test as to whether the Hub could expand its offering to rural and remote pupils faced with educational disadvantage due to locality and we are delighted that the first year has exceeded the national pass rate.

“We are pleased to see the SQA open Appeals Service this year as a recognition of the educational disruption faced by students and look forward to our final results being confirmed in October.”

The Advanced Higher Hub makes a key contribution to GCU’s mission as the University for the Common Good, with senior pupils attending the Hub afforded every opportunity to succeed in their Sixth-Year Advanced Higher studies as well as experience first-hand some of the opportunities and challenges that come with student life.

In order to support the academic Senior Phase pathways of pupils in our partner Glasgow City Council schools and beyond, the Hub offers Advanced Higher subjects: English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Modern Studies, Business Management, History and Physics to between 100 and 160 S6 pupils each academic year.
