Glasgow Caledonian presents Nursing Student of the Year award

The School of Health and Life Sciences Dean Professor Anita Simmers and Head of Nursing and Community Health Dr Val Ness presented the Nursing Student of the Year award at the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Scotland Nurse of the Year Awards.
They were delighted to present the RCN Scotland award to Grant Cooper, a newly qualified community staff nurse and former student at University of Dundee, at the ceremony in Edinburgh on June 12.
Sponsored by Glasgow Caledonian University, the award recognises those who have shown exceptional promise during their professional education or practice placement, deserving recognition for exceptional achievement during their studies.
Professor Simmers said: "As Scotland's largest provider of healthcare education in Scotland, we were delighted to sponsor the Nursing Student of the Year award. Whether focusing on children, adults, mental health, learning disabilities or professional studies, our nursing degrees offer students the opportunity to develop caring careers that can transform the lives of patients, families and communities."
Dr Ness said: "It was only fitting that Glasgow Caledonian University, the current largest provider of nursing education in Scotland, sponsored the Nursing Student of the Year award.
"This award is for students who deserve recognition for exceptional achievement during their studies and so it was a privilege to present the award to Grant Cooper.
"Grant, who studied at the University of Dundee, not only received excellent feedback throughout his nursing programme for his compassion and commitment, but also gained his nursing degree, with merit, whilst facing personal challenges.
"As Grant has shown, it takes resilience to become a nurse, but it is also such a privilege to be able to make a real difference to someone's life and I am sure Grant will continue to make a difference in the future."
