Donors help create fresh opportunities

The chance for more pupils from Glasgow Caledonian University’s flagship outreach programme to experience STEM subjects was announced at last night’s annual celebration from the School of Computing, Engineering and Built Environment (SCEBE).

Thanks to donors, GCU’s Foundation team has been able to raise £6,250, which will extend the University’s Inspire Residential Programme. The funding will allow GCU to offer a further 40 places to pupils aged 15-17 within the University’s Caledonian Club partner schools, based in communities in Glasgow where there is low or no uptake of higher education.

Focused on providing hands-on activities and soft skills development, pupils will take part in a three-day residential at GCU in a bid to inspire them to consider a STEM-related career.

Jill Watt, Director of the Glasgow Caledonian University Foundation, said to donors: “Ultimately, your funding will be targeting pupils at a critical time in their educational journey as they make key decisions about their future careers and, in particular, we will be working to increase inclusivity and diversity of the pupils undertaking the residential programme.”

Last night’s celebration was also an opportunity to highlight key developments in the School, as well as look ahead at opportunities to collaborate further with industry and professional body partners. Most importantly though, the event was an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the School's talented students, who have been generously supported by donors.

SCEBE's partners contribute greatly to the development of its programmes and in offering hands-on practical experience to ensure students leave the University with the knowledge and skills to be workplace ready.
