GCU Foundation raises more than £10k to help students

Glasgow Caledonian University students facing hardship during the coronavirus pandemic will receive a boost thanks to the fundraising efforts of the GCU Foundation.

The Foundation is delighted to announce its Kiltwalk Appeal has raised more than £10,000 in just a couple of days. The total, which is ahead of last year’s appeal, was achieved thanks to the Hunter Foundation, led by honorary graduate Sir Tom Hunter. Sir Tom generously made the decision to top up all donations raised by March 31 to charities taking part in the Kiltwalk from the publicised 50% to 100%.  

The money raised from the appeal will be used to support our students during the coronavirus pandemic.

The GCU Foundation’s Common Good Fund, that would typically support experiences such as travel awards, along with donations from Sir Alex Ferguson CBE and Santander Universities, will instead be redirected to make sure students will have the technology they need to continue their studies online and remain connected with their family and friends.

The Foundation is also providing additional financial support to students facing hardship through the Discretionary Fund. This will ensure they have the means to pay for essentials such as food and rent.

Jill Watt, Director of the Foundation, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the warmth and generosity of our donors, alumni and friends over the past few weeks, and to raise this amount in just a couple of days is incredible. We truly cannot thank our donors enough for working with us to provide added support to students facing extreme hardship.”          

The Foundation has been working closely with all of its donors to thank them for their continued support during these challenging times.
