Your voice is important

“Fostering creative collaboration between students and lecturers has been key for our department. Everyone should feel heard and valued.”

It runs in the family

Both my parents and my gran went to GCU, before it was known as GCU, so I’ve always known about and respected the university. I’d already studied in London, and I wanted to feel connected to a community again, to study hard and to be close to the city. Coming back home to Glasgow felt like the right choice.

My interests have grown

I didn’t start my course knowing exactly how things were going to turn out and that’s ok. You’re encouraged to take your time to understand your own values and what you really care about. I found myself really wanting to help strengthen the community between lectures and students on my course. The passion grew from the opportunity being there in the first place. Right from the beginning I was supported by everybody to help create the framework for a collaborative environment that works for everyone.

It’s the little things

There’s just this sense that everyone is made to feel welcome from the moment they step into campus. There are so many people from different backgrounds and with different life experiences all working together. The community feel is very open and honest especially if you find yourself in need of extra help or support. My work with the Common Good award has been really eye opening. At no point are you ever told ‘this is what you have to do, this is what you have to achieve for the common good’; you’re allowed the freedom to express it your own way.

“No matter your story, everyone celebrates in your successes; you’re celebrated for being you.”
