Apple Support
Jamf and your Apple device
Glasgow Caledonian University uses Jamf, our device management system for Apple products. We are now rolling it out more widely across university-provided Macs and iOS devices. This page explains what Jamf does, how it affects your device, and where to get your apps.
Self Service
Self Service is where you get your apps. You will find it on both macOS and iOS. It has university-approved software you can install without admin rights, plus common fixes you can run yourself. Check it first, as the app you need may already be there. If it isn’t, contact Information Services.
What Jamf does
Jamf lets Information Services set up, secure and support your Mac, iPad or iPhone without you needing to bring it in. It also:
- delivers and updates university-approved software
- applies security settings, such as disk encryption and a screen lock
- configures Wi-Fi, email, printing and other university services
- keeps macOS and iOS up to date.
If your device is reset, it will re-enrol automatically when it connects to the internet. This is expected.
Jamf Protect
Macs also have Jamf Protect, a security tool that runs quietly in the background to look for malware and suspicious activity. You don’t need to do anything. If you see a security alert, contact Information Services.
What you will notice
- Update prompts, sometimes with a deadline. Please install updates when prompted, and keep your device connected to the internet regularly (any connection will do) so it receives them.
- Occasional restarts, so make sure you save your work when prompted.
- Some settings locked or pre-set.
