Maths Summer School
The Maths Summer School (MSS) is delivered by the School of Science and Engineering (SSE) at Glasgow Caledonian University and has been designed for direct entry students progressing into GCU from college who have not undertaken or achieved specific mathematics units within their HN course.
For students who complete their HN without the mathematics as set out in their offer, full engagement with the MSS is compulsory.
Other SSE offer-holders who achieve all the required Mathematics from college who would like to update or revise their mathematics knowledge and study skills, may also engage with the MSS.
Dates and times
The 2026 MSS will be delivered in a blended learning manner (online and in-person). There is no cost to take part in the MSS. See the delivery modes below for each MSS stream.
Level 2 entry (full-time) and part-time entry
This MSS stream is aimed at Engineering offer holders who do not achieve Qualifications Scotland's Engineering Mathematics 3 and 4 (or equivalent). Between 10 August and 21 August (inclusive), the MSS will be delivered fully online. From Monday, 24 August, in-person tutorial and revision sessions will be delivered at the Glasgow Caledonian campus until the level 2 and part-time entry MSS exam on Wednesday, 26 August.
Level 3 entry (full-time)
This MSS stream is aimed at Engineering offer holders who do not achieve Qualifications Scotland's Engineering Mathematics 5 (or equivalent). From 29 June, offer holders shall be provided with online VLE access to the level 3 entry MSS. Students shall work through recorded lecture content via directed independent study. Students will be supported by regular online tutorials throughout July and August. From Monday, 24 August, in-person tutorial and revision sessions will be delivered at the Glasgow Caledonian campus in preparation for the level 3 entry MSS exam on Wednesday, 26 August.
How you will learn
Teaching sessions will consist of a mixture of recorded and live online lectures/tutorials, which compulsory attendees are required to engage in. Lecture materials, including notes, slides, worked examples and audio/video recordings of any online live lectures, will be made available on a virtual learning environment. For each block of study, students are expected to attempt a set of homework exercises. The interactive tutorials will be used for students to discuss any questions arising from these exercises. Students requiring additional support with the course material should contact the relevant lecturer.
All students who are required to engage with the MSS must undertake a compulsory exam, which takes place on 26 August 2026.
Registration and offers
Throughout the summer period, the School of Science and Engineering (SSE) will invite all eligible students to participate in the MSS.
All invitees will be provided with temporary GCU registration credentials in order to access all online sessions and accompanying resources. SSE staff will contact students by email in the run-up to the MSS with any additional information.
