Any applicant who resides in the UK and has applied for the full-time Masters (MA) in Television Fiction Writing and has received an offer who is from one of the following backgrounds:
- Care experienced
- From a refugee/asylum-seeking background and have Indefinite leave to remain in the UK
- First-generation refugees/asylum seekers (meaning your parents were refugees/asylum seekers).
- First in family to go to University
There is no age limit to the Scholarship.
What does ‘care experienced’ mean?
The term care-experienced refers to anyone who has been or is currently in care or from a looked-after background at any stage in their life, no matter how short, including adopted children who were previously looked after. This care may have been provided in one of many different settings such as residential care, foster care, kinship care, or through being looked after at home with a supervision requirement.
You must meet the eligibility criteria and have received an offer to study the course.

I understand that in order to administer my application, the University will process my information and submitting this application provides consent for GCU to do so.
Can I apply if I’m a GCU student or graduate?
Yes, if you fit the eligibility criteria (are care experienced and/or from a refugee or asylum-seeking background or currently seeking asylum).
Can I apply if I already have a master's degree from the UK or another country?
Yes.
Will I receive feedback on my application?
We are unfortunately unable to provide feedback to unsuccessful scholarship applicants.
Will I be required to provide proof of care experience or refugee/asylum seeking background?
You will be required to submit contact details of a reference who can confirm your eligibility for the scholarship.
This can be a:
- social worker or other local authority staff member
- doctor
- nurse
- lawyer
- solicitor
- college/university staff member
- teacher
- nursery teacher
- counsellor
- police officer
- family mediation worker
- charity or support worker
- careers advisor.
How will I receive the grant for my tuition fees?
This will be paid directly to the university.
How will I receive the £3,100 grant for my living/studying costs?
You can receive your grant directly into your bank account upon starting your course.
If receiving the money directly into your bank account could cause problems for you, then we can explore alternative payment options.
What can the £3,100 be spent on?
This non-repayable grant is a contribution towards your living expenses during your time studying for the MA. It is up to you how you use this grant; you may want to spend it on travel, rent, essentials, or costs associated with studying.
Will I have to pay it back?
No – non-repayable means you will not have to pay back any part of this Scholarship. This includes both the £3,100 grant and the £9,900 payment of tuition fees.
Can I work while studying for the MA TV programme?
Many students work part-time whilst completing this course.
