Overview

Year 3 entry only: We are currently only accepting applications for direct entry to Year 3 of this course. Applicants will normally need a relevant Higher National Diploma (HND). See the entry requirements below for full details.

Construction Managers, based on site and in the office, work with a wide range of people, from architects to construction workers.

This course covers a wide variety of technical, financial and planning aspects in theory and practice, using both traditional and online teaching methods. Most Construction Management graduates in Scotland have trained at GCU.

Industry experts provide guest lectures throughout the programme and as part of the programmes commitment to enhance the personal, professional and employability skills of our students, in Year 3 there are opportunities to spend six months on a work placement. There are also opportunities to study abroad, in Europe, Australia and the USA.

The course is fully accredited by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

Standard entry requirement

HND Construction Management with a minimum C grade in Year 1 and minimum B grade in Year 2.

English language

English language IELTS score of 6.0 with no element below 5.5

Relevant experience (Recognition of Prior Learning)

GCU's flexible entry policies exist to allow relevant work experience and prior learning to be considered towards standard entry or advanced entry into a course.

If you do not have the typical academic entry qualifications, but can demonstrate relevant work experience and/or credits from recognised professional bodies, you may be eligible to enter this course via the University's Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) scheme.

Minimum entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements are for widening access students only. If you are from a group that is not currently well-represented in higher education you may qualify as a widening access student. This includes living in a target postcode area, attending a target school or college, attending SWAP, are care-experienced or provide care for someone else, have refugee status or are an asylum seeker.

Assessment methods

A unique element of our course, which is mainly assessed through our students’ coursework, is the preparation for placement module, a practical four-day insert undertaken at the National Construction College Scotland. As well as industrial site visits as part of their construction technology modules, our students also have the opportunity to take part in a European study tour, which over the last few years has taken place in Spain. The tour is a multi-faceted development experience which focuses on intercultural awareness, deepening disciplinary learning in the field, employability, personal responsibility and leadership. The course has strong links with industry and many industrial organisations provide opportunities for placements and they also offer guest lectures in a number of modules.

Chartered status

Accredited by the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM), the Chartered Association of Building Engineers and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), your degree can take you to employment and further study around the world. On successful completion of their degree, many graduates work towards chartered membership status MCIOB and MRICS.

Industry links

The programme has been developed very much in partnership with the construction industry. This ensures teaching modules reflect and develop current best practice and graduates are well equipped to enter careers at management level. We have a very strong record of graduate employment due to the high regard with which the programme is held throughout the industry.

Teaching methods

Between the end of Level Two and the beginning of Level Three, our students have the chance to undertake a seven month work placement programme. Many of our students who do so find employment in these organisations when they finish their programme of study with us. Our students are prepared for a role in ‘setting out’ through the use of some surveying based equipment. We have strong links with industry and keep our course relevant to industry’s requirements, by inviting guests and former students to lecture our current cohort. We also have strong links with professional bodies who illustrate to our students the value and recognition achieved by becoming chartered.

Work placements

Third-year work placements can be completed in Scotland or abroad. These are not compulsory or guaranteed.

Part-time study

The part-time BSc Construction Management degree is one of only two available in Scotland.
