Aim
The primary aims of GCA are to give the community a voice and, address poverty, inclusive of child poverty amongst the residents of Girvan. This is achieved through addressing the key drivers of poverty by helping individuals to overcome poverty and wellbeing barriers inclusive of mental health, addiction, the cost-of-living crisis, and sustainable employment.
Summary
The Glendoune Community Association (GCA), supported by South Ayrshire Council's Thriving Communities service, plays a vital role in supporting residents and strengthening the local community in Girvan. Working alongside local partners, GCA helps individuals and families access a wide range of activities, essential services and opportunities, including adult learning, youth activities, employability advice, mental health and addiction support. Its work also helps address challenges such as the rising cost of living, food poverty and social isolation through practical initiatives, including community food provision and family support. Through bringing services closer to residents, encouraging volunteering and creating opportunities for community participation, GCA helps people develop skills, build confidence and access the support they need, contributing to a more connected, inclusive and resilient community.
What difference does it make?
GCA has fostered community spirit and provided young people with the opportunity to express their voice. At the beginning of the project, young people would come into the community centre for warmth and food. GCA now provides young people with a platform from which they can speak at national conferences, and create a meaningful change in their community.
Key take-aways
- Do not bring too many people on board as it can be hard to pass decisions through with a large decision-making team.
- Keep the decision-making team small but keep a large team to deliver the project.
