Apply for a research degree
Submit your PhD application using the online application portal. You will be asked to select from a list of strategic research subjects and available intakes.
How to apply
When proposing your own PhD topic, you are encouraged to make contact with the relevant research department. Here is a Guide to writing a PhD proposal.
During the application process, you will be asked to provide:
- Your research proposal (unless you apply for an existing project)
- A copy of all final undergraduate and postgraduate degree/postgraduate diploma certificates and transcripts
- An up-to-date copy of your CV
- Two references, either academic or work-related.
International applicants will also need to provide:
- English language certificate, such as an Academic IELTS, with an overall score of 6.5 with nothing below 6.0 or equivalent, or a UK-based degree dated within five years prior to the start date of the PhD intake
- A personal statement
- A scanned copy of your passport.
Minimum entry criteria
You will be asked to evidence the following minimum entry criteria:
- UK honours degree 2:1 (or equivalent) relevant to your chosen research topic
- Equivalent professional qualifications and appropriate research and professional experience will be considered
- English language level of IELTS score of 6.5 (or equivalent) with no element below 6.0 (international students only).
Please be advised that the above requirements outline the minimum criteria for applying.
The doctoral admissions process is both highly competitive and person/project-specific, and we therefore look for additional indicators of excellence beyond the minimum thresholds.
For PhD applicants, we typically expect a strong master’s degree with alignment to the PhD topic, methods and GCU’s Research Themes (Inclusive Societies, Sustainable Environments, and Healthy Lives) as well as additional academic or research achievements - for example demonstrated through publications, involvement in research projects, awards, and strong academic references that confirm the candidate’s research capabilities.
For DBA applicants, we typically expect a very good first degree, together with a minimum of three years of professional experience at a senior management level. Strong applications demonstrate alignment with GCU Research Themes (Inclusive Societies, Sustainable Environments, and Healthy Lives) as well as distinct professional or research achievements - for example, demonstrated through involvement (as lead) in major management projects, industry/sector awards, and strong references that confirm the candidate’s ability to conduct a professional research project.
Applicant interviews
You will be contacted for an interview if successfully shortlisted. Online interviews are available for overseas candidates.
