Material Selection
Programme Description
In this module students will be able to gain an understanding of the mechanical properties and heat treatment of alloy steels, cast irons and non-ferrous metals and alloys; surface hardening of steels; corrosion prevention methods; the main manufacturing processes for metals, polymers and composite materials (Casting, forming, joining, machining) and surfaces treatment that transform engineering materials into artefacts/components. This will also include the study of equilibrium phase diagrams of different types of engineering alloys.
Other activities such as laboratory sessions will take place in order to correlate the theory and practical aspects. The use of the CES Edupack software for optimum materials/process selection within a set of design constraints. This module will also provide the opportunity for students to be introduced to the use of e-learning tools such as wiki and asynchronic discussion forums.
