Widening Access

Glasgow Caledonian University is proud to be leading the way in widening access to higher education.  We are passionately committed to ensuring access to education for talented individuals regardless of background and helping to raise educational aspirations within our communities.  With 22% of our Scottish entrants coming from areas of multiple deprivations, we have already exceeded the Scottish Government’s 20% target ahead of its 2030 deadline.

Our position as a UK leader in widening access was recognised at the 2019 Social Mobility Awards when our former Principal, Professor Pamela Gillies CBE, was named Social Mobility Champion of the Year.

The Foundation raises funds for two of our key outreach and widening access programmes - the Caledonian Club, which encourages the educational aspirations of children and their families within five Glasgow communities and the Advanced Higher Hub, a flagship bridging programme which gives pupils from Glasgow schools the opportunity to study Advanced Highers on campus, providing greater access of opportunity to subjects that are not always available in school.

Caledonian Club

The Caledonian Club works with children as young as three through to 18 and their families, from some of the most disadvantaged areas in Glasgow.
