Software Development Short Course Scholarship

Predicting the shape of economic recovery in Scotland, post-Covid, is difficult, but as the University for the Common Good, we believe that we can collaborate to produce upskilling solutions that build resilience in our industrial sectors.
Supported by the Scottish Funding Council, GCU has flexible learning scholarships for up to 30 candidates and invites competitive applications to secure a place for intakes in May 2021 and September 2021.
The scholarships are designed for professionals in a career transition phase who seek to build depth of knowledge in software engineering and programming, networking, cloud computing, maths for computing and database development.
To assure integration with Scotland’s tech ecosystem, we are delighted to announce that GCU has developed a strategic partnership with Scottish Tech Army. It is our joint aspiration that volunteers from the 1000+ strong Scottish Tech Army will take advantage of this software development opportunity to boost their career and employment prospects.
Candidates will have the opportunity to study between ten and 120 credits. All learning is accredited and subject to assessment. Successful completion of each module will earn the learner portable academic credit with the option to accumulate seven modules to earn a Certificate of Higher Education in Computing - equivalent to completion of the first year of a BSc Software Development for Business course at GCU.
This pioneering project will enable successful candidates to substantially advance their software development knowledge, practice and qualifications through online study with GCU at first-year degree level. Additionally, learners will benefit from industrial mentor support and tech challenge integration from Scottish Tech Army.
This co-created approach to software skills development will give candidates the collateral that they need to match employer expectations and job opportunities.

How the scholarships work
The scholarships are designed for professionals in a career transition phase seeking to move into their first comprehensive software development or software engineering role.
Examples of candidates who should apply include:
- Candidates working in software development but without formal qualifications
- Candidates who have completed some tech training but are seeking entry-level positions and need more, in-depth knowledge
- CodeClan graduates
- Teachers in primary or secondary education seeking to improve their contemporary knowledge of computing science.
