School of Science and Engineering celebrates student success and future ambitions
Glasgow Caledonian University’s School of Science and Engineering (SSE) held its Annual Celebration on January 20, bringing together students, staff, alumni and industry partners to celebrate achievement, partnership and the next generation of science and engineering talent.
Hosted by GCU honorary graduate, alumnus and broadcaster Dr Laura Boyd, the event showcased the School’s refreshed identity and its continued commitment to delivering impact locally and globally. The evening placed students firmly at its heart, highlighting outstanding achievements recognised through a wide range of industry-sponsored awards, alongside research successes and strong collaborations that enrich the student experience.
A key theme of the celebration was the strength and longevity of SSE’s relationships with industry. Long-standing donors and partners were recognised for their continued commitment to supporting students through prizes, mentoring and scholarships, helping to open doors and create pathways into STEM careers. Alongside our long-standing collaborations, new donors and partners were also celebrated and welcomed.
Professor Jo Lumsden, Dean of SSE, said: “Our School celebration event is always a highlight of the academic calendar. This year, we welcomed back loyal industrial collaborators alongside new partners, recognising through a range of student awards the significant contribution they make to individual students and to the wider student experience via their ongoing engagement. It is through such close collaboration and support that we can deliver, with integrity, excellent, ethical, inspirational and transformative science and engineering education and research, for the benefit of our students and our local, national and international communities. On behalf of all SSE colleagues, I want to say a massive ‘thank you’ to our industrial collaborators and donors, alongside a pride-filled ‘congratulations’ to our student award winners.”
Alumni and industry representatives also shared insights into how collaboration between academia and the professions continues to drive opportunity, innovation and social impact. Among the announcements on the night was confirmation of additional philanthropic support from alumnus Peter McGettrick, UK Operations Lead at Turner & Townsend, building on previous contributions to GCU’s 150th Anniversary Campaign and reinforcing a shared commitment to widening participation.
