Principal appointed Convener of Universities Scotland’s Learning and Teaching Committee

Professor Mairi Watson, Principal and Vice Chancellor, has been appointed Convener of Universities Scotland’s Learning and Teaching Committee.

Professor Watson will take a lead for the sector on all policy matters relating to teaching and assessment, skills development, quality assurance, widening access and ongoing education reform.

She joins fellow new appointee Martin Boyle, Principal of the Open University in Scotland, who has been appointed as Universities Scotland’s Vice Convener.

Professor Watson said: “Universities play a major role in the success of Scotland, driving economic growth, benefiting communities and helping our young people learn, grow and contribute positively to society. I’m delighted to be appointed to this role and look forward to working with colleagues to further strengthen the transformative work we deliver.”

Professor James Miller, Universities Scotland Convener, said: “I would like to thank Martin and Mairi for agreeing to take on these important roles with Universities Scotland. Both bring a wealth of experience, insight and commitment, and I am grateful for their willingness to contribute their time and expertise in support of the sector. I look forward to working with them as we continue to advance the collective interests of Scotland’s universities.”

Professor Watson takes over the role from Professor Steve Olivier, Principal at Robert Gordon University, who has served two consecutive terms as Committee Convener. She will serve an initial a two-year period in the role, with re-election possible for a second two-year term.
