Glasgow Caledonian students secure ‘dream’ radio internship opportunity at Global
Glasgow Caledonian University is working in partnership with Global, the Media & Entertainment group, to give Media and Journalism students first-hand experience working behind the scenes at Global’s Broadcast Centre in Glasgow, in the heart of the city on West Regent Street.
Multimedia journalism students Cammy Gallagher and Maya Amir secured paid internships at Heart Scotland, match funded by support from the GCU Foundation.
Cammy and Maya have had the chance to work alongside radio presenters, including Heart Scotland’s breakfast host Des Clarke (pictured), and production teams, to help research and produce content, as well as brainstorm new show ideas and interact with listeners.
It was this “behind the scenes” aspect that appealed most to Cammy, who hopes to work in radio production going forward. He said: “I gained invaluable broadcasting experience, developed a wide range of practical skills beyond university, and had the privilege of working with a brilliant, welcoming, and inspiring team.”
Having grown up listening to radio stations such as Heart and Capital, Maya described the internship as a “dream opportunity”. She said: “I spent a lot of time working on radio both inside and outside of university. In fact, I spent most of my fourth year in Glasgow Caledonian’s radio studio! So, this internship is a chance for me to put into action everything I’ve learned.”
Glasgow Caledonian graduates are highly sought after for their ability to hit the ground running within fast-paced roles, thanks to the practical training they receive during their studies. This industry-ready approach explains why 77% of GCU journalism students secure media-related positions within six months of graduating.
