Dr Valerie Ness

Valerie is a registered nurse with a background in emergency nursing. She joined GCU in 2002 and has since worked in a variety of roles. Valerie has extensive experience of learning, teaching and curriculum development, including being the programme development lead (and then programme lead) for the large pre-registration nursing programme. She has also led large and complex programme reviews which also had to meet professional body requirements.

She achieved Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has held a variety of leadership roles, culminating in her current role as Head of Department for Nursing, Community and Public Health.

Valerie is also an active member of the Safeguarding Health through Infection Prevention research group, leading the antimicrobial stewardship workstream. Her PhD explored nurse prescribers’ antimicrobial prescribing behaviour, and her post-doctoral work has focused on the role of the nurse in AMS, supervising PhD students and collaborating nationally and internationally with others in the field, including AMS competency development with NES.

She is committed to supporting the Common Good values and attributes, and both the student and staff experience at GCU. Her passion is delivering, and supporting others to deliver high-quality teaching and learning that is accessible to all, along with impactful research and engagement with our local communities.
