Dr Timothy Humpton

Reader

Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences

Tim joined the Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences at GCU in January 2022. He is now a Reader and Principal Investigator aligned with the strategic ‘Molecular Mechanisms of Long-Term Conditions’ group in the School of Health and Life Sciences. Tim’s research group is focused on elucidating protective functions of the p53 tumour suppressor protein in the liver. The group are particularly interested in uncovering non-tumour functions for p53 during, for example, liver regeneration, in the response to overfeeding, and in the progression from fatty liver (NAFLD) to advanced liver disease (non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)) and liver cancer (HCC). The ultimate aim of Tim’s research is to develop molecular rationale to support the repurposing of existing cancer therapies for use in cancer prevention. Tim is supported by grant funding from Tenouvs Scotland (2022-2023), the Academy of Medical Sciences (AMS) Springboard scheme (2023-2025), and a Medical Research Council (MRC) New Investigator Research Grant (2024-2026).
