Stephen is a Research Associate with the Scottish Poverty & Inequality Research Unit (SPIRU) and co-author of two SPIRU reports: ‘Citizens Perspectives on Poverty in Edinburgh’ (May 2020) for the Edinburgh Poverty Commission and ‘Local Action in Scotland to Tackle Food Insecurity During the Coronavirus Crisis’ (June 2020) for the Poverty & Inequality Commission.

Stephen is also a Welfare Rights Adviser with Citizens Advice helping those in poverty to maximise their incomes, reduce expenditure, and improve financial capability. Through this role Stephen has gained frontline knowledge of the Universal Credit system in practice via co-location in Jobcentre Plus offices.

Influenced by his welfare rights experience, Stephen’s primary research interests include Universal Credit, conditionality in the social security system, and individual financial education, capability and resilience.
