Dr Shirley Rate is the Vice Dean in the Glasgow School for Business and Society.  Prior to taking up this role, Shirley was Head of Department, then Associate Dean (Learning, Teaching and Quality) in the School.  Her main teaching and scholarly research interests are in marketing, advertising and communications and she has been involved in various consultancy projects in marketing and communications planning.  Her principal research interests centre on market segmentation and its application to the mature market with specific reference to the hospitality industry.  She completed her PhD in this area from the University of Strathclyde.

Since taking up the role of Vice Dean, Shirley’s work contributes to the strategic and operational leadership of the School with the aim of enhancing its national and international profile in education research and community engagement, and her focus on ensuring that the University’s mission ‘For the Common Good’ lies at the heart of School activities.
