Lecturer

Department of Mechanical Engineering

Juan Manuel is a Lecturer in Robotics in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He joined GCU in February 2022. Before this, he obtained a Computing Engineering degree (Meng) in Spain (Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya), an MSc in Robotics Engineering in Denmark (University of Southern Denmark), and PhD in Robotics and Chemistry at the University of Glasgow. After his PhD, he continued as a research associate at the University of Glasgow, and later on, he obtained a Lord Kelvin Adam Smith Research Fellowship.

His research aims to study how the Origin of Life happened on planet Earth four billion years ago, and what can we learnt from this process to design today's bio-inspired robotics. To achieve this, he works at the interface between Artificial Intelligence, Computer Vision and 3D-printing to build autonomous robots that can conduct this line of research. More recently he has focused on using generative artificial intelligence to simulate in-silico some of these processes, and also to discover new manufacturing techniques.
