In 2023, Boatemaa took up a lectureship within the Department of Biological and Biomedical Science at Glasgow Caledonian University.
Boatemaa completed a BSc (Hons) in Medical Laboratory Technology at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana (2007) and worked as an Intern Biomedical Scientist at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Ghana (2007-2008). She then completed the MSc Biomolecular and Biomedical Science at Glasgow Caledonian (2008-2009).
Boatemaa was awarded a Glasgow Caledonian PhD Studentship and Scottish Overseas Student Association Scholarship (2009-2012) within the area of Cell and Molecular Biology in the Martin lab to investigate Connexin and Pannexin cellular communication in obesity. Also, in the Martin lab and in collaboration with Zealand Pharma (Denmark), she investigated novel peptides targeting Connexin function (2012-2013) as a Research Assistant. Boatemaa investigated Narrow Spectrum Kinase inhibitors in Dry Eye Disease within the Hagan’s lab in collaboration with TopiVert Pharma (London) as a Postdoctoral Research Assistant (2014-2016) also at Glasgow Caledonian.
Following a career break, Boatemaa returned to Glasgow Caledonian and worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher to investigate imaging Diabetic whole mount skin with funding from Scottish Universities Life Science Alliance (SULSA) Early Career Researcher (ECR) Development fund.
At Glasgow Caledonian, Boatemaa is a member of the “Molecular Mechanisms of Long-Term conditions” and has a research interest in novel therapeutic potential of natural products. She was Curator of the GCU Skin Research Tissue Bank (SRTB) (2019-2022) which provides well annotated normal and diabetic tissue samples to support research into human skin disease. Boatemaa continues to support the GCU SRTB (2023 -present). She is also part of the STEM network at GCU and has organised several events on Career Development for students within the Department of Biological Science and beyond.
Externally, Boatemaa has served as ECR representative for SULSA (2020-2022), then Co-Chair of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Steering Group at SULSA (2023-present). She was also a Community Ambassador/speaker for Diabetes UK, a Nuffield Research Placement Mentor (2024), a Destination STEMM Mentor (2024) and Pint of Science Country Director (Ghana) (2024-present).
