Department of Social Work

Dr Natalia Farmer is a lecturer in social work at Glasgow Caledonian University.

Her research interests include social injustice, homelessness, migration, postcolonial bordering and human rights in social work. She focuses upon amplifying the voices of marginalised individuals and communities with lived and living experience.

She has published in journals and edited books exploring the impact of insecure immigration status, drawing from critical theory within intersectionality and controversy analysis to interrogate the tensions between immigration legislation and social work practice.

Her recent publication, ‘There’s No Hope for Any Kind of Decent Life’: A Qualitative Study to Explore the Perspectives of People Experiencing Homelessness with a Recent Non-Fatal Overdose in Scotland (2023), was conducted as part of a wider pilot randomised controlled trial (RCT) in Glasgow, Scotland, with NHS pharmacists and third sector homeless caseworkers to gain insight from those with living experiences of both homelessness and non-fatal drug overdose.
