Dr Funmilayo B. Offiong
Lecturer
Department of EngineeringFunmilayo is a Lecturer in the Department of Engineering, where she teaches and supports undergraduate and postgraduate students in electronic engineering. She currently teaches internet-of-things systems, image processing and machine vision, and wireless communications, and coordinates EEE honours research project. She is an active researcher, with research output published in IEEE Access, IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, IntechOpen, Frontiers in Communications and Networks and flagship refereed conferences. Her research interests centre on mobile and wireless communication in the RF and optical domains, applied internet-of-things, and smart sensing systems, with a growing focus on integrated sensing, communication and localisation, IoT-enabled AgriTech, and environmental monitoring. Her work applies connected sensor networks and data-driven technologies to sustainable sensing, agriculture and environmental intelligence. She also maintains an active interest in engineering education. Her research has been funded by EPSRC, TETFUND and NCC.
She joined GCU in 2023 from Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria, where she was a Lecturer in Electronic and Electrical Engineering from 2011 to 2023. She was also a Teaching Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA, through the Empowering the Teachers programme, where she also obtained the MIT Kaufman Teaching Certificate in 2021.
Funmilayo is a member of IET, WES and a senior member of IEEE. She is passionate about inspiring young people, particularly girls, to see engineering and STEM as accessible career pathways, and support this through outreach, mentoring and STEM Ambassador activities.
