Elaine Gardiner is a Senior Lecturer in Diagnostic Imaging and Programme Lead for the MSc in Medical Ultrasound.

Elaine is passionate about developing and delivering high-quality training and education opportunities for Radiographers and Sonographers from a wide range of professional backgrounds.

Qualified as a Radiographer, she has over 20 years’ experience working in Obstetric and Gynaecological Ultrasound, specialising in fetal echocardiography and ultrasound of the fetal thyroid before becoming Lead Sonographer for one of the largest health boards in the UK. She brought her leadership and clinical expertise to GCU in 2014, where she continues to develop, lead, and contribute to both undergraduate and postgraduate learning and teaching, influencing ultrasound education at local, national and global level.

Elaine has taken an active role in developing and revising ultrasound National Occupational Standards (NOS) and Pregnancy and Newborn Screening (PNBS) standards in Scotland and continues to represent ultrasound and ultrasound education at various National fora.

Elaine’s doctoral research explores diagnostic error in obstetric ultrasound and the impact that this has on Sonographers. Findings from this study seek to inform policy and practice around patient safety and Sonographer health and well-being.
