Professor Candace Currie joined GCU London on March 1st 2019 as Professor of Global Adolescent Health. She previously held Personal Chairs in Child and Adolescent Health at the Universities of Edinburgh and St Andrews and established the Child and Adolescent Health Research Unit (CAHRU) in 2000 and successfully directed the centre for 19 years. Professor Currie was also founding Director of a WHO Collaborating Centre for Child and Adolescent Health Policy from 2013-2019.
With Professor Antony Morgan, Professor Currie is developing a new research unit at GCU London to conduct research into global adolescent health issues with the purpose to contributing to young people’s health improvement nationally and globally in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Professor Currie was awarded an OBE for Services to Healthcare in 2008 and in 2015, a Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award. Her research focuses on socioeconomic and gender inequalities, and in pubertal development and its impact on adolescent health and wellbeing. She holds honorary positions at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands and at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute in Melbourne.
