The RISE Centre delivers world-leading interdisciplinary research and innovation focused on engineering resilient and sustainable futures for people and planet.
RISE adopts a holistic approach to fostering transdisciplinary, innovative, and impact-driven research for Sustainable Environments through an innovative three-environment lens – built, natural, and digital. We break down traditional disciplinary boundaries to deliver holistic, evidence-based, impactful, and future-focused excellent research seeking to address solutions to major environmental and sustainability challenges at both local and global levels. RISE acts as a hub for collaboration across SSE, the wider University, and other research centres, as well as with partners locally, nationally, and internationally.
Hosted within the School of Science and Engineering (SSE), RISE provides a collaborative, interdisciplinary space dedicated to GCU’s mission for the Common Good. RISE enables challenge-based research by bringing together expertise across a range of disciplines such as engineering, computing science, and sustainability, environmental and social sciences. It also reflects strong applied research strengths across the built environment, energy, manufacturing, creative industries, health, and business sectors.
Our growing portfolio of projects demonstrates the impact of our research across Glasgow, Scotland, and the wider UK — shaping policy, supporting businesses, and strengthening communities through partnerships with civic, industrial, and community stakeholders. RISE is also committed to global collaboration, working with international partners to deliver transformative research that addresses a wide range of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
