Susan Macdonald

From her beginnings in nursing at Glasgow Caledonian to her global ventures in pharmaceuticals and executive search, Susan's journey exemplifies resilience, passion, and the power of pursuing one's true calling. Today, she leads Macdonald Lewis Associates, where she merges her expertise in health, life sciences, and talent acquisition to foster growth and success.

Susan was drawn to the nursing course at Glasgow Caledonian due to its balance between an academic and practical “hands on” focus, allowing her to split her time between classes and time on the wards.

“During my time at Glasgow Caledonian I loved how supportive the academic and clinical staff were towards their students but also how they challenged and encouraged us to grow to our highest potentials.”

After graduating she went straight to working in the level 10 surgical unit at Glasgow’s Western Infirmary. After several months and knowing she had a passion for patient care, Susan moved from nursing into the pharmaceuticals industry where she believed she could positively impact more patients.

“I knew that I loved nursing, especially the patient care aspect. I thought, 'If I don't enjoy this new industry, I can always return to nursing.' So, I transitioned from nursing to the pharmaceutical industry, where I spent 17 years. During this time, I worked primarily in commercial roles such as sales, marketing, business development, and licensing.”

"I was then headhunted for another pharmaceutical company, however I decided to join the search firm instead.”

“Given my strong reputation in the pharmaceutical industry, I knew I could always return if it didn't work out. Additionally, working at the Search firm provided an excellent opportunity to explore various job options. It was a win-win situation.”

“I took that role and spent 10 years with the company. During this time, I worked not only in the UK but also lived and worked in China, Singapore, and supported other international markets."

"In late 2013, I returned to the UK, and by the end of 2014, I decided it was time for a change. I took a sabbatical in 2015 and then established my current role as director of Macdonald Lewis Associates Limited in 2016, which I’ve been dedicated to ever since.”

Susan’s role at Macdonald Lewis Associates Limited is a synthesis of her experience in health, life sciences and Executive Search. As Director, she helps clients identify, attract and retain great people, enabling companies and people to grow, thrive and achieve together.

In future, Susan aims to continue her mission of empowerment, helping others by encouraging them to work to the best of their abilities and using her own voice to speak out and be a voice for others who may not be heard.
