BSc Audio Engineering and Electronics

Chief Technical Officer at QTV

Growing up, Gareth Gordon never anticipated working in an industry that let him be driven by passion projects and see him work on global televised events like Glastonbury, Champions League Finals and Rio Olympics.

At school he felt his personality did not match with academia and exam pressure got to him, but success followed by pursuing his passions and taking advantage of every opportunity.

After completing his degree in Audio Engineering and Electronics, Gareth won an apprenticeship at the BBC in 2003 where he stayed until 2014, quickly moving up through the department as a Vision Supervisor and Outside Broadcast facilities guarantee.

In pursuit of new challenges, Gareth moved to freelancing in 2014 working on global productions like the Olympics as well as contracts closer to home for the BBC, Channel 4, BT Sport, Sky Sports, DAZN and Amazon.

In 2020 Gareth took the role of Chief Technical Officer at QTV with the ambition of building a lasting broadcast engineering legacy in Scotland. Here he has helped pioneer remote broadcast productions for sport in Scotland and last year was responsible for the technical implementation of VAR for Scottish Football.

Don’t pressurise yourself

He said: “I only now after 20 years, have a good idea of what I want to do in my career. I’ve been fortunate and moved in an upward trajectory in my career. This has not been through any exact career aspirations but by loving what I do, being driven to know more, do it better and wanting to work at the next level.

A career doesn’t have to be linear, sometimes you have to take a step back, observe where you are and see what you want to do next. Often that means taking a step down to build confidence and trust in your abilities to do something different.”

My degree at GCU gave me the foundation that I built my career on. It also gave me the eureka moment that helped me realise where my strengths lay and what drove me. I love being creative, being collaborative and supporting people that are driven in the same way. I am fortunate to have found a career that fills that cup.
