Daniel Rae, Social media and Marketing Consultant and co-founder of We Are Hydrogen, teaches us how passion, practical learning, and the courage to take risks can lead to a fulfilling and dynamic career.
From a young age, Daniel had a natural interest in technology. This led him to study a BSc in Multimedia Technology at Glasgow Caledonian University, a decision influenced by the course's practical approach and the opportunity to progress from an HND he had already completed.
“The whole course covered a lot of different bases—programming, design, writing, project management. It ticked a lot of boxes for me.”
Daniel says he appreciated how hands-on and wide-ranging the curriculum was, giving him the skills and confidence to take on the challenges of a constantly evolving industry.
After gaining experience in marketing and digital space, Daniel co-founded We Are Hydrogen. However, taking the leap into business ownership wasn’t without its challenges.
“It came about when I had a one-year-old kid and a mortgage. It was a huge risk.”
“However, I made Mike [his co-founder] a deal that if he could get a client on the books, then I would jump ship and join him. And he did, so I jumped in.”
For Daniel, building Hydrogen was a deeply rewarding journey that brought success and a lasting impact in the world of social media marketing.
However, in 2022, he and his co-founder Mike made the decision to sell the agency and pursue their own paths.
Now, as he looks towards the future, Daniel is excited about what lies ahead.
“Consultancy and freelance work is the obvious next step.”
“But I'm also lecturing part-time, I've joined a board, and I've got a few business opportunities too.”
To students and recent graduates, Daniel offers simple but powerful advice.
“Get hands-on experience. Internships, placements, part-time jobs—they all help you stand out. Everyone comes out with similar qualifications, what makes you different is what you’ve actually done.”
Daniel Rae’s story is a powerful example of the value of practical learning, saying yes to new opportunities, and having the courage to create your own path—even when it feels like a risk.
You might get asked to do something that you're not fully confident in doing or not totally sure about, but try and answer with yes and then figure out how you're going to do it.
